Until daybreak
Ryohei Terada
This is the first solo album by Ryohei Terada, a musician from Japan, trained in Tuvan traditional music and throat singing. Since 2010, he has been practising the traditional music and throat singing of Tuva while staying in Kyzyl, the capital city of Tuva, for around three months every year. He has developed his own unique world of lyrics and sound in traditional Tuvan music and Japanese folk songs. The result is an ambitious work that crosses over traditional Tuvan music, including throat singing, and pop music. This is an "old and new" musical work produced in Tokyo by a Japanese musician who was fascinated by the Siberian musical world, joined by splendid musicians whom he have performed with in Tokyo.
Most of the songs are original compositions written by Ryohei himself, but the album contains a variety of music ranging from pop and rock music to authentic Tuvan traditional music. He has also ambitiously ventured into the world of poetry, writing songs with Japanese lyrics based on traditional Tuvan songs and lyrics in the style of Tuvan rhymed poetry.
Guest musicians include Christopher Hardy (percussion), Falcon (guitar), Tanehiko Sekijima and Emy Sakai (violin and other string instruments), Hiroo Miyasaka (contrabass), Yuki Sugahara (cello), and Taro Terahara (bansuri, North Indian classical music). The sound of the album is supported by Manao Doi, who has a long career as a music producer and arranger active at the forefront, and has also done a lot of engineering work for world music productions, including mixing, mastering, and other directions.
