Artist Profile

  • OKAPY

With solid bass playing and a unique voice, OKAPY is a bass vocalist whose music gently resonates with listeners. Born on June 14, 1990, in Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan, she began studying piano at age three. She later played euphonium in elementary school and clarinet in junior high school. At age fourteen, she started teaching herself electric bass and became fascinated by the power of low frequencies. During high school, she performed actively in a three-piece band as both bassist and vocalist. This experience became the foundation of her distinctive style. In 2009, she entered the Popular Music Program at Showa University of Music Junior College, majoring in bass performance. She graduated in 2012 after studying music theory and performance under Masakazu Goto and Mutsuhiro Shirafune. In the same year, she joined Tokyo Brass Style on a European tour in France, Germany, and Spain. She has also worked as a support bassist for various artists. Recognized for her musicianship and groove, she signed an endorsement agreement with Yamaha in 2016. As a solo artist and singer-songwriter, she creates original music that combines powerful bass playing with warm and comforting vocals. Her style covers pop, rock, funk, fusion, Balkan music, Afrobeat, and R and B. Her YouTube channel has exceeded seven million views. Based in Matsumoto, Nagano, she continues to share her passion for bass through live performances, online lessons, and video content.
