Raindrops drumming on power lines, fragments of news warping in the distance
“The countdown has begun,” someone seemed to whisper
Even covering my ears, the damp air traces the same words
If the world were to end, it would be on a night like this
Streetlights hung lower than usual, water dripping from the bus stop roof marking the asphalt like a second hand
But I didn't open my umbrella. Feeling the cold rain on my wet forehead
I tried saying aloud, “No, it won't end.”
The sound bounced off the building walls—distorted like a mirror
Reflecting a double-exposed self-portrait where optimism and pessimism overlapped
An alarm sounds deep within my chest
It's poppy, like a jingle leaking from a radio
Repeating:
“still in the rain, eyes on the drain.”
I clench my fist in my pocket
While another voice murmurs, “It's okay, it's fake news.”
Rain line—pelting droplets form Morse code
“world_end?” “no_way!” alternately tapped
Reflecting on the water's surface, drawing chaotic grids
Beneath dark clouds, my pulse beats at 120 BPM
Doomsday scenarios and daily loops
Synchronize to the same beat
The rain's cadence stretches the rhythm
Returning the echoes of thought to the sky
The news app flashes a red badge
Demanding updates: “Missiles in another sky, ice breaking in another sea.”
Fingers slide across the screen
But eyes drift to the neon blurring the crosswalk
There, still, two people share laughter under an open umbrella
A simulation of the world ending
And a scene proving it won't
Blur together in the same raindrops
Sirens at my ear
“Countdown begins” and “False alarm!” race simultaneously
My heartbeat drops to half-time
Yet my footsteps unconsciously overtake the beat
Rain line ―― Emergency lights reflected on the cold pavement
“game_over?” “carry_on!” flash alternately
Tricking the eye about the depth of puddles
The delay of droplets overlays future and past
I trace a songline with my wet breath
End and beginning share the same chord
Deep within the tape hiss
“what-if” scenarios open filters
Low, undulating synths roar like the tide
Closing my umbrella and gazing skyward
Raindrops wash my eyes
Peeling away layers of light and dark
Rain line ―― A lightning bolt pierces the clouds, pausing the world for an instant
“shutdown?” and “restart!” appear simultaneously
And without hesitation, I tap the latter
Cloudy droplets transform into prisms
And the entire city shimmers like a mirror ball
Dancing to the beat of the apocalypse
I echo the words, “It can't end yet.”
The rain recedes, leaving only the afterimage of taillights in the frame
When I remove my earphones
The world is still, undeniably, moving
Feeling the next raincloud slowly taking aim
