Saikaku's laughter...
The night in the tenement house has not yet dawned.

He scolds society and searches for the truth.
This is the inescapable beginning of the ukiyo-zoshi.

He rolls his eyes at the Naniwa sky.
On the night of May 14th, waiting for shadows,
The two of them never break their promise.
Osan is dressed in a cotton robe. A strange man mocks the world.
"I will convert all living beings," he declares.
He lets the poison of this world seep into the tip of his brush.
"The bottomlessness of a jewel's cup is a man's flaw."
He has Kenko's teachings pierced deep in his heart.

"Kimono, haori, bath money, and grooming."
These are the few weapons he needs to survive this cruel world.
He asks you to provide them. Write it as a payment.
"I'll put it aside, even though I'm reluctant to." Even such a bravado is something I was born into this world.

Sneaking into your usual sleeping place instead.
"There's no sunshine for men," someone laughs.
In the depths of darkness, the knot of fleeting dreams unravels.

How frustrating it is to wait impatiently for a man like Moemon.
With repeated lamentations, I dragged Moemon along.
And now, we're falling into the mud together, unaware of anything. Sleep

Waiting until dawn, a precious moment
As I unconsciously and joyfully weave my dreams
Saikaku's pen mercilessly pursues their shadow
Scolding society and searching for the truth
This is the inescapable beginning of ukiyo-zoshi

"I have given my body to a man of cotton."
"Waiting until dawn in my eternal sleep."
Are the tears or lies pouring into my bottomless cup?
