Hyakki Yako

A theatrical alternative hip hop track that reimagines Hyakki Yako, the legendary night parade of yokai, through the lens of modern society. With wit and sharp social satire, the lyrics expose the contradiction of being encouraged to express individuality while still being expected to conform. Oni, tengu, nurikabe and other figures from Japanese folklore become symbols of those who exist beyond conventional boundaries. A commanding female vocal shifts between playful provocation and dramatic storytelling, shaping the song into an elegant yet unruly nocturnal procession. Dark humor, swagger and a distinctly Japanese supernatural aesthetic transform social pressure into spectacle, celebrating those who choose to remain imperfect, unconventional and unmistakably themselves.
