ICONA (pronounced 'Ikoona')

ICONA (pronounced 'Ikoona') is a Tokyo-based digital romantics unit that reconstructs the structural beauty of 1980s New Wave for the modern era.

The unit is led by Tohto Arai, a veteran music manipulator with a 30-year career supporting Japan's top-tier artists. Together with Shinichiro Ohta (Vocals/Guitar) and Hiroyuki Sonobe (Keyboards), ICONA creates a sophisticated soundscape that blends vintage digital textures with urban decadence.

Their production is deeply rooted in the DNA of YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra), featuring the expertise of legendary engineer Yasuo Kimoto, who has worked extensively with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi.

ICONA is set to release their debut single on June 1st, 2026, marking the arrival of a new sonic icon in the electronic music scene.

Artist Profile

  • ICONA

**ICONA** ICONA is a Tokyo-based electronic trio featuring Shinichiro Ohta (Vocals), Hiroyuki Sonobe (Keyboards), and Tohto Arai (Producer / Keyboards). Bringing together music, visual art, and a distinct aesthetic sensibility, ICONA reimagines the spirit of synth-pop, new wave, and post-punk from a contemporary perspective. Rather than recreating the past, the trio explores the possibilities of electronic music as a living, evolving form of expression. Their sound combines meticulous programming with organic performance, delicate melodies, and cinematic spatial textures. Themes of memory, distance, beauty, and human connection run through their work, creating music that is electronic yet deeply human-precise yet emotionally open. ICONA began its activities on June 1, 2026. Since its debut, the trio has been featured by independent international media including POST-PUNK.COM, DISTOPIC (Italy), Skreen B Music Blog (UK), and Rock'n'Roll Vibration (Brazil). From Tokyo, ICONA presents a contemporary vision of electronic music where sound, image, and human emotion converge-not as a revival of the past, but as a new expression born from it.
