As a river guide, I have traveled from river to river,
carrying my guitar with me across Japan and to rivers around the world.
[Taki-bi] was born from memories of the people I met along the way,
and from myself, moving forward even while feeling lost.
River guides may be awkward and not always good at making their way in the world.
But they are more passionate than anyone,
and they truly love this way of life.
The sound of the river, the flickering fire, conversations with friends.
I put what I felt in those moments directly into this song.
No decoration. Nothing overproduced.
I simply left the air of those days in the music.
River Gypsy is the music project of Yohei Sugawara, a riverboard guide whose life has been shaped by rivers, travel, and personal challenge. Based in Mitake, Okutama, Tokyo, Yohei works as a professional riverboarding and hydrospeed guide while writing songs inspired by life on the river, the feeling of moving forward by his own will, and the long detours that shape a life. His music is not created as a message for someone else, but as an expression of following his own heart and passion, born from the days he has kept moving forward while feeling lost, holding on to this way of life as if he could not let it go. Through a simple voice and guitar, River Gypsy expresses the detours of life, the uncertainty of moving forward, and the act of challenging himself while still carrying weakness.
