Artist Profile

  • Jorj Wilfrid

Raised in Tokyo, Jorj Wilfrid has been exposed to New York, Paris, and London cultures since childhood by his parents. This has always encouraged him to step back and look at Tokyo from a different angle. He studied linguistics in college where he looks at not only language but human nature as well. Through language, he was able to further deepen his understanding about how it can add value to existing things and turn them into something new. This led him to think about the essence of human nature such as food, clothing and shelter, which is something he was keen to be involved in. As he thinks about his career, he looks back on his past and realizes that he likes combining various cultures. During his life in Tokyo, he was exposed to international cultures, absorbing what he thought was interesting about them and adding it to his sensitivity. At first glance, Tokyo seemed to be a complicated mixture of tradition and foreign cultures. He later realized that this mixture is the beauty of this city and that it is the same as the total artwork. They appear to be different things, but they are connected, and it is the same as the total work. He made the total artwork brand JOTY JOYC based on his favorite genres of clothing, artwork, photography, film, and sound. His mission was to produce refined work no matter the era using a design language called Miyabi which means refinement in English. His design language Miyabi, is a Japanese aesthetic value of beauty, with a sense of simplicity, imperfection, and sophistication. Five keywords supporting its design language are dignity, gravity, solemnity, urbanity, and intrepidity. Those five keywords are the values that form the basis for production. He uses his work to express his values and beliefs. He produces his work with the belief that it is possible to make a change in this world if we are true to ourselves and continue to advance despite our uncertainties. Through these values, he expresses his belief to those who see his work. It expresses its conviction that the world will change if we continue to be ourselves and advance despite our uncertainties. Using his design language of Miyabi, Jorj Wilfrid, the total artist of JOTY JOYC, produces work which is refined and is considered a luxury by some people.
