Es is the third single from Fukuoka-based rock duo JEIN.
Taking its title from the psychoanalytic concept of the id, Es serves as the culmination of the band's early trilogy, following Sunday, midnight and Kitsune-Ame.
Driven by alarm-like repeating guitar motifs and aggressively distorted bass, the song explores the impulses, desires, and hidden selves that lie beneath the surface of consciousness.
- Who is this limiter really for? -
Caught between self-doubt and self-awareness, the narrator gradually turns away from the expectations and judgments of others, choosing instead to listen to the voice buried deep within.
The song ultimately arrives at a quiet yet powerful realization:
- What lies beneath the mask is even more beautiful.-
Even when distorted, twisted, or falling apart, the self remains the self.
The contrast between the song's floating vocals and its tense, abrasive instrumentation creates a space where vulnerability and strength coexist. Rather than a song of rebellion, Es becomes a song of self-acceptance - an awakening that emerges from embracing one's imperfections instead of denying them.
If Sunday, midnight drifted through the boundary between sleep and wakefulness, and Kitsune-Ame wandered through the fleeting space between reality and fantasy, Es stands at the end of that journey, confronting the self that has been waiting beneath the mask all along.
Fukuoka-based rock duo consisting of Osato (Vo./Gt./Dr.) and Oharu (Vo./Ba.), who handle both songwriting and performance. Rooted in shoegaze, alternative rock, and dream pop, the band creates immersive soundscapes layered with deep reverberation and floating textures. Their lyrics portray untouchable memories and nameless emotions through imagery imbued with a distinctly Japanese sense of atmosphere and humidity. Balancing unease with tenderness, and resignation with faint traces of salvation, they craft music that lingers like the fading resonance left behind after a waking dream.
