What does it really mean to become an adult?
That question floated to the surface of my mind when I received a commission from the members of Saxophone Boys. There's something undeniably stylish and grown-up about them-yet in reality, we're not that far apart in age. I can't quite pinpoint when I myself became an adult. Not that I'm embarrassed to admit I still feel a bit childish at times.
But over the years, I've developed certain habits. Like shaping myself into the version that others seem to expect, and trying to believe in that version enough to carry on. Or learning not to get discouraged when life doesn't go quite the way I dreamed it would.
That's just what being an adult is, I think. If you look around the city, you'll see people-likely not all that brave or brilliant-wearing the face of adulthood as they walk through their day. I'm no exception: timid, lazy even, but still making my way through the world with a sense of dignity. Perhaps the key is to enjoy the stumbling and the worrying, and to embrace those moments as part of the journey.
The title Lifestrider captures that feeling. Even when life seems dull or absurd, may we stride forward with a quiet joy in the little things.
