The Vain 99 Nights Fruitless Love

The Kasa-onna (Hyakanome) labors in vain for 100 nights in Fukakusa, but her wish is fulfilled after 99 nights.

The legend of Ono no Komachi (a peerless beauty) and Fukakusa no Shosho (the man madly in love with her).

Komachi's cruel condition is, "If you visit me for 100 nights, I will make a promise to you."

She continues to visit him through rain and wind, and with just one night left, the man finally gives up and dies.

Even after his death, the man's obsession torments Komachi.
Ono no Komachi listlessly tells Fukakusa no Shosho, who is proposing to marry her, "Make a mark on the platform of my mansion every night. After 100 nights and 100 marks, I will be yours." It is not a promise of love, but an impossible demand to make him give up. Shosho continues to visit. In the darkness, wearing a hat, he tramples barefoot in the mud. 1 day, 10 days, 50 days... Komachi hears him coming from inside the mansion, and one by one, she drops kaya nuts into the box like maracas. "Shala... you've come again." The seasons pass, autumn rain, winter snow. Shosho's body is worn out, and his mind is dominated by hollow attachment.
Finally, the 99th night. One night left to complete his wish. But that night, a fierce snowstorm (or perhaps heavy rain) hits. In her room, Komachi plays with the 99th nut, her heart wavering. "Surely he's really going to accomplish this?" Meanwhile, Shosho reaches the mansion's gate, but loses consciousness from the cold and fatigue. On the morning of the 100th night, Komachi opens the gate to find Shosho buried in the snow, dead. Even in death, his eyes remain wide open, gazing at Komachi's mansion. Will Komachi, seeing his face in death, shed tears for the first time, or laugh hysterically? The story ends abruptly, with a cacophony ringing out.
