Careful, careful

Too late, too late

Christmas almost

Slipped sideways

I ran through the station crowd

With a cake box leaning down

Reservation at a quarter to eight

And me already ten minutes late

You stood there by the silver tree

Pretending you were mad at me

Then saw the frosting on the side

And laughed until you nearly cried

I said, “I ruined everything”

You said, “Looks sweet enough to me”

Maybe perfect’s overrated

When your smile can save it

The cake box leaned a little

The night went off the plan

But you took my messy Christmas

And held it in your hands

The cake box leaned a little

We laughed it all away

If this is what a mistake feels like

I hope we make some more someday

La-la, frosting on the ribbon

La-la, snow on your hair

La-la, nothing went right

But I’d still meet you there

The restaurant lost our table too

So we bought fries for me and you

Sat outside a closed café

Sharing cake with plastic plates

Your gloves got cream on the thumb

My paper fork broke into crumbs

You said, “This is kind of us”

A little late and laughing too much

No candlelight, no polished scene

Just streetlamps and a vending machine

But when you looked at me that way

I didn’t miss the plan we made

The cake box leaned a little

The night went off the plan

But you took my messy Christmas

And held it in your hands

The cake box leaned a little

We laughed it all away

If this is what a mistake feels like

I hope we make some more someday

Years from now, if we forget

The songs they played, the things we said

I think we’ll still remember this

A crooked box, a cream-stained kiss

You said, “Don’t fix what’s already good”

I said, “I’d save tonight if I could”

Not for how it was supposed to be

But how you made it light for me

The cake box leaned a little

But somehow we stood closer

Christmas looked a little different

Leaning on your shoulder

The cake box leaned a little

And I wouldn’t change a thing

If love can start this sideways

Let it wobble, let it sing

La-la, frosting on the ribbon

La-la, snow on your hair

La-la, nothing went right

But I’d still meet you there

Careful, careful

No need, no need

Christmas found us

Offbeat and sweet
