Long Way Home

Nana Yanase

What is the name of the town you are from?

Home is the place where our hearts are

Even if it is far, far away

Those white petals in the wind are cherry blossoms

Children run on the street lined with trees

Sweet breezes blow over clover fields

Where you played when you were young

The heavy rain will stop soon

And a strong sun will shine down

People plow the field

Praying for a good harvest

Please listen to the dialect of my village

It sounds so dear to me

I am far away from home now

I wish you could find the road I lost

So that my heart can follow it

Even if I can’t go back there again

When sunset tints the edge of the mountains

Music of a festival will flow in the air

Crickets sing on the river bank

Golden rice stalks swing

Villagers will drink sake

And sing and dance until late at night

“Tag, you’re it!”

Another fall goes by

Tell me about the town he is living in now

Even if I bury his memory in my heart

The echo I hear is from my home

I wish you could find the road you lost

So that your heart can follow it

Even if you can’t go back there again

Your heart belongs to your home

Home is the place where our hearts are

Even if it is far, far away

    Nana Yanase

Singer-songwriter Nana Yanase, active in Japan, has released her second self-cover album, which she spent about five years recording. In addition to rearranging original songs released from 2005 to 2015, she also covers songs by musicians she was close to, including Akira Okabe & Yukina Nakayama, Motomichi Uyama, and Kimito Saijo. The arrangements feature support band leader Riho Oyama, along with Shingo Mimura, K-suke Tanaka, and Risaburo Matsuki, and were recorded in Nara and Hokkaido with a diverse array of instruments. The title track is a new English rendition of "Ieji," originally released in 2015. Now more than 20 years since her debut, her deepened vocal expression and tightly coordinated performances are highlights of this work. While including previously released songs, the album also represents a bold attempt at new musical challenges.
