Taizan have been observing this giant ice waterfall plunge basin every year from the middle of winter until April since 2010. However, I was curious as to how this natural structure came to be and so this year, began my observations from the beginning of the winter season and finally unraveled its secrets.
I noticed that the water from the waterfall froze almost instantly upon coming into contact with the rounded top. This is a rare natural phenomenon where the large quantities of super cooled water rapidly freeze upon contact quickly forming a large ice formation.
On the 1st of December, I observed the ice taking a shape similar to the leaves of a lotus and the circular plate beginning to form on the top. After around 1 month, it becomes the size you can see in this video and continues to grow.
Throughout winter until the beginning of March, the ice formation extending out from the waterfall plunge basin continues to grow and can reach a maximum of almost 50m.
Over the season this area will receive great snowfall, the valley will be buried with over 10m of snow and the ice formation will continue to grow in size.
