BL4CK PEARL, a project of vocalist Vela and musician SOZEN OTSUBO, presents their long-awaited new single, "Utopia."
The song was written for "The Journey of Ship's Cat 2022-2025" (2025), the latest film in contemporary artist Kenji Yanobe's "SHIP'S CAT" series. It debuted live on October 4, 2025, alongside reggae musician DOZAN11 aka Dozan Miki, at the opening event of Kenji Yanobe's "Open Storage 2025 LUCA: THE LANDING." The event took place at MASK (MEGA ART STORAGE KITAKAGAYA), a large-scale art storage facility in Kitakagaya, Osaka. The music video was released afterward.
"Utopia" is the second chapter of the BL4CK PEARL x Kenji Yanobe collaboration. It follows "Dawn," the theme song for "SHIP'S CAT (Muse)," which was permanently installed at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, in 2022. Where "Dawn" depicted the beginning of a journey, "Utopia" sings of where that journey leads. The story is a grand mythology in which countless "space cats" carry the seeds of life to Earth from "LUCA," a spaceship shaped like the Tower of the Sun with cat ears. The song follows this journey from 2022 to 2025, from "BIG CAT BANG" at GINZA SIX in Tokyo to the spaceship's "landing" in Osaka. Rooted in R&B and pop, with touches of electronic and ambient textures, BL4CK PEARL's signature urban sound carries the lingering resonance of the space cats' voyage.
Born in 1999 in Hiroshima, SOZEN OTSUBO is an artist, audio engineer, and producer operating as a solo project. His early fascination with sound led him to create about 100 tracks and edit video during high school. After refining analog console engineering and film scoring at a music vocational school, he expanded into artist work, song production, and sound design, guided by a distinct sensibility and strong technical skills. As a solo artist, he developed "Yamabico" with a nursery school. In the unit BL4CK PEARL with singer Vela, he composed "Dawn," the theme for Kenji Yanobe's "SHIP'S CAT" at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, and "ANTINOMY" for Baron Ueda's "SPINYZ." He also supplies music for visual works and other artists and creates remixes. Beyond creation, he applies his own methods to mixing and mastering, supporting nearly 200 tracks annually across major and independent releases. He mixes his own work in Dolby Atmos.
