  Sumi is a Japanese singer-songwriter who began releasing music in April 2026. Writing and composing her own work, she consistently explores a single theme: things that pass through impermanence, transience, the quiet movement between states. Her songwriting is built on a simple principle: to reach emotional depth through plain everyday language, precise word choice, and unexpected structure. She avoids elaborate vocabulary or stylistic tricks, writing in words anyone would recognize yet achieving resonance through how those words are arranged. Her work is marked by a distinctive linguistic fingerprint: archaic Japanese expressions and onomatopoeia dissolved into contemporary speech, creating a texture that feels both ancient and immediate.
