Our freshman album releasing in December 2019 entails songs either composed or related to Queen Liliuokalani.
Queen Liliuokalani was the last Queen in the Hawaii kingdom. She succeeded the throne as the Queen of the Hawaii kingdom with the death of the former king and elder brother, David Kalākaua on January 29, 1891. However, Queen Liliuokalani and the Hawaii kingdom were overthrown by the provisional government with the assistance of the U.S. military on January 17, 1893. As a result, she abdicated her throne and Hawaii was annexed to the United States.
Queen Liliuokalani composed a total of 165 pieces in her 79 years life. On this album, we arranged and recorded Liliuokalani's music as contemporary music or easy listening music, and done sociably in order to hand down to future generations.
By sharing Queen Liliuokalani's music, we hope you become more familiar with the history and legends of Hawaii.
The harmonic vocal unit "Hiliu", means the sound or call of the wind instrument, the Hawaiian conch shell. Huliu has introduced our performances since 2014. We have received an official nomination (International album special recognition award) of the 43rd annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards from the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts for our first CD project "Be Still My Heart". Also nominated the 45th and 46th Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards.
