Kyoto Takashimaya, Kawaramachi street
The Shijo Kawaramachi intersection is Kyoto's premier downtown area, lined with commercial facilities, and Kyoto Takashimaya is located on the southwest corner. Kyoto Takashimaya was founded in Karasuma Matsubara in 1831, moved to Karasuma Takatsuji in 1912, and moved to its current location in 1950. A long-established department store that originated as a kimono store in Kyoto, it continues to be loved by many people, including Kyoto citizens. Kawaramachi-dori Street is located outside Heian-kyo, and is thought to have been opened when the city area was expanded to include the Kamo-gawa River in the early Edo period. Commercial buildings also line the street, making it a lively street with many people coming and going throughout the year.
