Artist Profile

• Elephant Dance Band

Formed in November 2007 around the vocalist and guitarist Yu Sato, Elephant Dance Band is known for strong melodies and a distinctive vocal quality that is both rare and familiar. Driven by the background of Sato as a former drummer, the band delivers unique songs with diverse rhythms. On June 9, 2015, they released their first 7-inch single, Honto no Machi / Melody, through CCC RECORDS, a label run by a record shop and café in Shimokitazawa.Following a hiatus, Sato returned to his roots, focusing on the pure joy of composing on the guitar and singing his own songs. He resumed live performances as a solo artist in 2022.Sato enlisted a strong support lineup featuring Makki (pipoo) on electric guitar, Yuji Yasumoto (ex. fula) on upright bass, and China Watanabe on cajón. Switching from electric to acoustic guitar, he shifted toward a simpler style that embraces acoustic textures and spontaneity. He digitally released the EP Shima no Uta (Song of the Island) on October 15, 2023. On November 20, 2024, he released his second 7-inch single in nine years, Aimai / Kumo no Tairiku (Ambiguous / Continent of Clouds), via his independent label, Elephant Dance Records. This release also features Slope, marking his first digital-only single in two years.
