Artist Profile

  • Ryukyu HAL

Continuing from the era of the Ryukyu Dynasty, he is an orthodox "Yuta" (shaman). Born during the American occupation of Okinawa after the war, he grew up in Koza city, where American culture and Okinawan culture blend. During the Battle of Okinawa, one in four Okinawan people perished. Okinawa was rebuilt through music, and the traditional instrument, the sanshin, remains a symbol of peace, deeply resonating in the hearts of the Okinawan people across various music genres, including pop and rock. Known as a legendary Yuta in Okinawa, he provides counseling to over 10,000 people annually with his unique abilities. Since relocating to Kanagawa Prefecture in 2005, people from all over Japan visit for his counseling services from his exceptional abilities. The Ryukyu shaman delivers messages through his music. HAL has helped over 200,000 individuals with their concerns, and has transformed those experiences of healing and advice into songs, engaging in musical and speaking activities. After moving his base to Tokyo from Kanagawa in 2009, he made his major debut under Sony Music Associated Records, and performs nearly 90 live shows and lectures annually. He began performing internationally in 2017, hosting concerts often in Taiwan and New York. His U.S. tour conducted in 2018 (North Carolina, New Jersey, Iowa, New York), received significant media coverage. In 2019, he performed at the renowned live house Pianos in New York, garnering high praise from organizers. HAL has a wide range of activities in TV shows and magazines, making intermittent appearances on programs such as "Sunday Japon" (TBS), "HEY!HEY!HEY!" (CX), and "London Hearts" (TV Asahi). His music, categorized as "spiritual music" transcends trends, healing the hearts of modern people, known as the modern "Ryukyu Uta", the songs of Ryukyu. As a spiritual artist, HAL engages in a wide array of activities, including publishing books, painting, and photography. According to the Ryukyu beliefs, a Yuta is a shaman appointed by the Ryukyu Kingdom. They oversee public rituals and festivals and make a living providing spiritual advice to the general public, often singing "Ryukyu Uta" to convey messages.
