Why I Am Drawn to Ravel:by Rikako Murata
People seem to be drawn to what is filled with mystery, to unexpected contrasts:
to that which makes us want to know more.
Ravel is said to have worn a mask in daily life, keeping even his closest friends at a certain distance so that his true nature remained elusive. And yet, within his music one sometimes glimpses a romanticism even more intense than that of the Romantics themselves. It is precisely this gap that stirs my heart.
Rather than a blazing, overt romanticism, it feels as though his music gently touches the deepest, most delicate recesses of the human heart « places into which no one else can intrude. Ravel loved the sea. Borrowing his own words, he pursued throughout his life »a perfection like the horizon, forever beyond reach. the only way to truly know his humanity is through the works he left behind.
Through me as a medium, I hope to share :even if only a little: the profound allure of Ravel and his music with you all.
