Lyric

Under the Grow Light

Arlith Sove

The timer clicks at ten

A violet square appears

Across the metal shelf

And all the sleeping leaves

The room has no sunrise

Only a careful glow

I watch the stems lift slowly

Like they already know

Not the sun

But enough for tonight

Not the sky

But a small measured light

I do not open fully

I only stay alive

Under the Grow Light

I open halfway

Green in borrowed color

Warm in a scheduled haze

Nothing here is natural

Nothing here is cruel

I am still learning

What a little light can do

The cable bends behind

A row of clay and glass

The shadows look like roots

That never touch the past

A new shoot leans upward

Thin as a whispered thread

Not because morning came

But because something stayed

Not the sun

But enough for tonight

Not the sky

But a small measured light

I do not need the whole world

To keep one leaf from closing

Under the Grow Light

I open halfway

Green in borrowed color

Warm in a scheduled haze

Nothing here is natural

Nothing here is cruel

I am still learning

What a little light can do

Maybe false is not the word

For what kept me from the dark

Maybe even wired warmth

Can hold a tender part

Under the Grow Light

I do not call it dawn

But something in the leaves

Has not given up and gone

I will not force a bloom

I will not ask for proof

I am still learning

What a little light can do

The timer hums again

The room stays softly blue

I close only a little

And keep the green in view

    Room for the Roots

    Arlith Sove

Inside the greenhouse that was supposed to protect her, her emotions slowly warped into the shape of their pot
Kindness that had been overwatered, vines that were never cut back, dead leaves she could not throw away, soil that never suited her
She was not withered
She simply had nowhere left to put down her roots
Arlith Sove's first album is a humid botanical art pop record that portrays emotion through the acts of growing, pruning, and repotting it
