They reminisce about the times in school when they practiced an old North American tradition of passing a handwritten letter during class. This letter would read "Will you go with me? Check [ ] Yes, [ ] No, [ ] Maybe so"
The sender of the letter would eagerly wait for his or her crush to put a check mark or "x" beside their answer and send the letter back.
In this song, the two realize that the nostalgic love has stirred a new love within them. The feelings now are exactly the same as they used to be.
