Amakawa Kotoha's original song "Smile and Distance" explores the delicate space between two people, where feelings of affection alone are not always enough to cross the emotional line between them.

The song begins with the sincere wish, "I want to see your smile," and carries a warm message that hearts can remain connected no matter how far apart two people may be. As the story continues, however, the emotions become more realistic. Messages that once came often begin to decrease, bringing a quiet sense of loneliness. Instead of blaming the other person, the narrator chooses to understand, accepting that simply getting through life can sometimes be difficult.

In the second half, the deeper truth appears: "I like you, but I cannot take that final step." There is a desire to become closer, yet also an appreciation for the freedom that exists within the relationship as it is now. Because both feelings matter, there is no simple answer.

Blending everyday laughter, quiet loneliness, and a relationship that cannot easily be called either love or friendship, "Smile and Distance" expresses the complicated but gentle emotions that come with truly caring for someone.
