magaru is the solo project of Japanese singer-songwriter, guitarist and bassist Satoshi Kato. The name - Japanese for "to bend" - comes from Takuji Tsuzuki's popular-science book on general relativity, "Hatashite Kūkan wa Magatte Iru ka" ("Is Space Curved?", Kodansha). Born in 1983 in Seto, Aichi, Japan, Kato picked up an acoustic guitar in his second year of junior high school and soon began writing songs. From 2003 to 2017 he played guitar and sang in the twin-vocal band theSing2YOU, and from 2005 to 2009 he played electric bass in Thomas Age. Between 2008 and 2013 he organized MusicShower, an outdoor music festival in Okuwa, Nagano. He released his first EP, "solo note", in 2014. Since 2015 he has sung and appeared in TV commercials for the eyewear chain Kikuchi Megane, and in 2019 he sang a corporate commercial song for Brother. In recent years he has expanded his activities overseas, working on forms of expression that reach beyond music alone. In October 2026 he releases three digital singles in a row, his first new work in more than ten years.
