沖縄県伊是名島生まれ 父、「大工棟梁 島 親保(しんぽう)」のつま弾く三線と、 母、「(神女=かみんちゅ)マサ」が口ずさむ古謡を子守唄に育つ。 幼少の頃、ウクレレ、三線を独学。 興南高校在学中、ギター・クラブに所属。琉球民謡(登川流)を『金城昌吉』氏に師事。 ハワイアン・スラックキー・ギターの第一人者『山内”アラニ”雄喜』氏にハワイアン音楽を学ぶ。
