17歳で上京し、18歳からDJを始める。1980年代半ばよりクラブやイベントでキャリアを積み、1992 年、単身ニューヨークに渡る。 同年、DJ Battle For World Supremacy に出場し準優勝を獲得。 HipHop シーンにおいて日本人 DJ が初めてその実力を認知されたこの歴史的瞬間から、dj honda のアーティストとしての活動がスタート。 1995年、アルバム『h』でメジャーデビュー。全米 Billboard Top R&B/HipHop Albums で90位 にランクイン。続く『h II(1997)』は 57位／Heatseekers 16位 を記録し、収録曲 “Travellin’ Man (feat. Mos Def)” は Hot Rap Songs 17位 を獲得した後16週連続チャートインし続け、日本人DJとしてアメリカのヒップホップ・シーンに名を轟かせた。 その後も『h III(2001)』『h 2000(1999)』を発表。 これまでにGangstarr、Redman、Jeru the Damaja、Mos Def、Fat Joe、M.O.P、The Beatnuts、KRS ONE、Common、De La Soul、EPMDなどHipHop GoldenAgeの立役者とも言える数多くのアーティストと共演。 2009年に『h IV』を世界同時リリース。 Limp BizkitのボーカルFred Durstをフィーチャーした楽曲”The Incredible”はジャンルの枠を飛び越え衝撃を残した。 同年、日本に帰国し国内での制作・活動を開始。 日本を代表する Jazz ミュージシャン・日野皓正のアルバム『Aftershock(2011)』『Unity -h factor(2013)』のビートを全曲担当し、全国ツアーなども行なった。 その後もB.I.G.JOE『Unfinished Connection(2015)』、紅桜『DARK SIDE(2019)』、ill-bosstino『KINGS CROSS(2021)』、SIMON JAP『Golden Age(2022)』TWIGY『RAPATTACK(2022)』と国内有数のラッパー達とのコラボアルバムをプロデュース。 また、GLAY、大黒摩季などジャンルレスにREMIX制作も手掛ける。 そして2025年、自身名義としては実に16年ぶりとなるフルアルバム『hV』・『hV -Japan Edition-』をWリリース。 自身のキャリアを詰め込んだ本作品はリリックもdj hondaが手掛ける真のフルセルフプロデュース作品となった。 現在も尚、進化し続けるdj hondaの快進撃は止まらない。
