This song was inspired by the time and scenery I experienced on the west coast of Canada with friends after the river season had ended, back when I was traveling from river to river as a guide.
Canada was the first country I visited after leaving Japan, searching for something I couldn't yet put into words. I kept moving forward, believing that unless I changed something and continued to push myself, I would never find what I was looking for.
I didn't want to turn back, but I still had no idea where I was going or what I was searching for.
This song captures one scene from that chapter of my life.
River Gypsy is the music project of Yohei Sugawara, a riverboard guide whose life has been shaped by rivers, travel, and personal challenge. Based in Mitake, Okutama, Tokyo, Yohei works as a professional riverboarding and hydrospeed guide while writing songs inspired by life on the river, the feeling of moving forward by his own will, and the long detours that shape a life. His music is not created as a message for someone else, but as an expression of following his own heart and passion, born from the days he has kept moving forward while feeling lost, holding on to this way of life as if he could not let it go. Through a simple voice and guitar, River Gypsy expresses the detours of life, the uncertainty of moving forward, and the act of challenging himself while still carrying weakness.
