Nishiki 3-Chome

In Nishiki 3-chome, Nagoya,
familiar signs disappear,
old establishments give way to new ones,
and the men who once ruled
the night gradually fade from the streets.

From the Showa era to Reiwa, the city has changed.
The way people spend their nights has changed.
Values, relationships,
and even the ways people seek connection have changed.

But have human desires really changed?

Youth, beauty, love, loneliness,
recognition, and fleeting dreams.
The line between buyer and seller begins to blur,
as everyone gives something away in search of something else.

Desire simply changes its clothes.

Set against a nightlife district in transition,
Nishiki 3-Chome reflects on the desires
that persist across generations
and the impermanence waiting beyond them.

Even knowing that the illusion
will disappear with the morning,
when night falls, the lights come on once again.

Tonight, someone is buying another illusion.

This is not nostalgic enka.
Nor does it abandon the emotional spirit
that enka has carried through generations.

The emotion of Showa, resonating through the sensibility of Reiwa.
