Artist Profile

  • Ayako Kodai

A Japanese singer-songwriter born and raised in the Showa era, I never aspired to become a singer. I was never good at singing. I loved anime and aspired to be a voice actor. After joining a theater company and performing on stage, I found acting to be fun. I was rejected from a theater company's trainee selection exam for being a poor singer. Feeling frustrated, I began taking private lessons from a composer I met at the company's training center. As I sang several existing songs in class, I began to yearn for a song that perfectly expressed my feelings. "Then why don't you write your own?" my composer suggested. So, under his guidance, I began writing and composing my own songs. He suggested I hold a concert, so I did. That was in 1990. I've held concerts every year since. Most of my songs are nonfiction and life-sized. I feel like many people who seek out ancient songs are carrying some kind of burden. I once received a deep thank you from someone who said, "After listening to your songs, my desire to die subsided." Even if I'm not very good at it, if I can help people in this way, I want to continue singing.
