Lyric

You leave the window open by the sink

So morning finds the cups before I do

A folded towel, the blue one that you like

And two small oranges waiting there for you

I know the little sounds this room can make

The chair against the floor, the kettle's breath

You turn and smile before the coffee wakes

And all the hurried hours loosen yet

Stay for the quiet after breakfast

Stay while the warm plates lose their heat

Let the day arrive without an answer

Let your hand rest lightly next to me

The bakery leaves flour along the street

A paper bag grows soft beside your coat

You tell me something funny, twice, perhaps

Because I missed the first part of the joke

No promise needs a ribbon or a name

No borrowed future waiting to be won

The room is small, the afternoon is plain

And somehow that is where my heart has come

Stay for the quiet after breakfast

Stay while the warm plates lose their heat

Let the day arrive without an answer

Let your hand rest lightly next to me

If rain begins, we'll listen from the doorway

If sunlight comes, we'll carry out the chairs

Nothing grand is needed for this moment

You are here, and I am here

Stay for the quiet after breakfast

Stay while the warm plates lose their heat

Let the day arrive without an answer

Let your hand rest lightly next to me

The blue towel dries beside the window

Your hand rests lightly next to me
