Tokyo-based Soccer. and Ibaraki-based Sonic Grandmother were both formed in 2021, and self-released their first EP in the same year. The two up-and-coming bands of Japanese emo scene are releasing a split via Ungulates, a Tokyo-based DIY label that also releases their homies such as downt, Kudaranai 1Nichi and ANORAK!.
While featuring twinkle riffs that show the influences from midwest emo scene, soccer. has English lyrics and Sonic Grandmother has Japanese lyrics, each with their own output. The sing-along parts common to both bands are great in live, so be sure to check them out if you have a chance to see them perform near you.
Fans of all-time emo bands from Cap'n Jazz and Marietta to Forests, as well as J-Rock bands like Asian Kung-fu Generation should encounter these two promising bands.
