They say a girl should do her makeup
Like it’s basic manners just to leave the door
I saved up money for the brushes
All the little colors I was never taught before
Every morning I’m there blending
Trying to look “natural” but better than my face
On a date I change it slightly
Different shades and shimmer, just in case
With my girlfriends at a dinner
We all show up like it’s a runway night
Smiling like it’s accidental
But we all hope we’re the cutest in the light
There’s so much you don’t have to fix
I know there’s not that much that you can do
But when I’m tired from holding up this world
All I really want to hear from you
Is “You look so pretty tonight”
Or “Are you okay?” when I hold my pain inside
Just a little word, just a little sign
Can turn a heavy day into a lighter night
Once a month my body’s aching
Stomach twisting, pounding in my head
I know you can’t take it from me
I just want “Are you alright?” instead
Before it comes I get so restless
Pick a fight for reasons I can’t name
I want you to say you’re sorry
Even if you’re not the one to blame
Later on I think about it
Realize it was the hormones in my way
Then of course I tell you “sorry”
I don’t want us throwing any days away
There’s so much you don’t have to fix
I know there’s not that much that you can do
But when my moods are spinning out of control
All I really want to hear from you
Is “You can rest, I’ve got this”
Or “Are you okay?” when I try to act just fine
Just a gentle word, just a softer tone
Can turn a lonely fight into a safer night
One day if we choose a baby
It is my body that will carry all that weight
I’ll be sick and I’ll be fragile
And I might have to step away and wait
So don’t say “I want kids” so lightly
Like it’s just a picture in a frame
If I go through tears and labor
It’s because it’s you who give that child a name
There’s so much you don’t have to fix
I know there’s not that much that you can do
But if I say I want your child someday
It’s ‘cause I trust my life inside of you
Tell me “You look beautiful today”
Hold me when I’m breaking in my head
Just a little care, just a little truth
Means more than any perfect words you’ve said
Being a girl is heavy sometimes
But it feels a little lighter by your side
I don’t need a hero to save me
Just someone who will ask if I’m alright
