Always the Universe

The stars, this Earth, and all of us

Where does the universe begin?

Maybe it’s been there ever since

Forever wide, forever vast

We’re just a part of all that’s passed

And that’s enough

That’s all it is

No more than this

So far away, no touch, no sound

That glowing light we stare at now

In darkened skies it used to drift

And left us trembling in its myth

To calm the fear that rose so high

We gave it names and made the sky

We drew our stories line by line

And shaped the stars into design

We gave a meaning to the void

But are we not ourselves a ploy?

If something has a name, we cope

We hang our fear on threadbare hope

We cover “unknown” with a mask

So we can breathe, so we can last

We always turn our eyes away

From truths we fear, day after day

We gave a form to shapeless dread

That’s how we hold the stars instead

But everything we feared and found

Was just the silence all around

What scared us most was never “none”

But that we gave it names and run

Always the Universe

With names or none, it still exists

With meaning or not — it still persists

We simply chase a tiny sun

We just believe in something more

And maybe that is what it's for

And that’s enough

It always was

Just what it was
