Artist Profile

  • PALESS

Formed in 2009 by Ryohei Otsuki, the project is based in Tokyo and is currently centered on composing and releasing music from a self-built studio. In its early phase, the work was characterized by compositions structured around patchwork-like soundscapes created using programs within keyboards. These were combined with elements such as delay and effects-generated noise, as well as unconventional materials pastoral in tone yet modest (or even everyday) and slightly dissonant such as the sound of bells attached to tree branches or plastic umbrellas and set in motion, layered with vocals. This resulted in a genreless sonic identity and somewhat experimental staging. Through the total use of these elements, the group pursued a reinterpretation of the world as they perceived it, as well as an expression of the deeper layers of their own inner experiences. In works since 2020, while maintaining their experimental approach, they have also embraced more conventionally structured compositions. Alongside their introspective expression, a sense of sound that opens outward toward the external world has begun to emerge, further expanding the range of their expression.
