This song grew out of a small, familiar kind of self-directed frustration - the feeling of doing the same thing again, despite knowing better. Time you were genuinely looking forward to turns out to be boring once it actually arrives, and before you know it, you're caught in the same regret all over again. I think almost everyone has felt that at some point.
I wanted to use the specific, nostalgic weight of the phrase "summer vacation" to poke fun at my own inability to use time well, while still being honest about how frustrating that really feels underneath the joke. Rather than writing something purely regretful, or something that just gives up entirely, I leaned on lighter metaphors - Hikoboshi, an event horizon - to turn the feeling into something you can laugh at a little, so it doesn't end up crushing you.
The final line, "I just hope this was all a dream," isn't really about erasing the regret. It's more about giving myself permission to loosen up a bit, and forgive the version of me who's going to wake up tomorrow and probably do it all again.
