"Scarborough Fair" is a traditional English ballad, a folk song dating back to before the 17th century. Its allegorical lyrics feature lovers setting each other impossible tasks, with some interpretations suggesting it's the words of a deceased knight's spirit speaking to a traveler. The recurring herbs-parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme-are said by some to be a charm to ward off spirits. Popularized globally by Simon & Garfunkel in the 1960s, it became an icon of the folk revival. "Scarborough" refers to a market town in North Yorkshire. The traditional melody, more rustic than the modern version, differs slightly and continues to be performed by artists worldwide in various styles.
