With lyricist Yasushi Akimoto serving as general producer, AKB48 began its activities in 2005 at the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara, based on the concept of "idols you can go to see". Through fan-participation events such as "AKB48 General Election" and "Request Hour" and million-selling singles, AKB48 has grown into one of Japan's leading idol groups. Their 60th single "Hisasiburi no Lip Gloss," released on October 19, 2022, has been ranked No. 1 in the Oricon Weekly Singles Ranking for 47 consecutive singles. It updated their own record of the number of consecutive No.1 singles by female artists and the number of No.1 singles by female artists in total. AKB48 has five sister groups in Japan (SKE48, NMB48, HKT48, NGT48, STU48) and six groups overseas (JKT48, BNK48, MNL48, AKB48 TeamSH, AKB48 TeamTP, CGM48).
