Where are you from?
It’s an easy question
But not for me
Here, there or nowhere, I don’t know
I come from different places
Mix of words
Mix of norms
I wonder if I’m all mixed up
Am I more like my dad
Or more like my mom
Or maybe neither
Where do I belong?
Who am I?
Made up my mind
Won’t worry no more
I don’t have to be like anyone else
Don’t define me
Don’t confine me
I am ME
Where’s your home?
It’s an easy question
But not for me
Here, there or nowhere, I don’t know
I lived in different places
In the East
In the West
You can see that I’m all mixed up
More like him
Or More like her
Or maybe neither
Where do I belong?
Who am I?
Made up my mind
Won’t worry no more
I don’t want to be like anyone else
Don’t define me
Don’t confine me
I am ME
I ain’t your average kid
I’m hard to figure out
But I got so much more to offer the world, you will see
I found a place where I can be who I am
I found a friend whom I can be who I am
That’s my home
Found my home
I am ME
Made up my mind
Won’t worry no more
I don’t have to be like anyone else in the world
So I just made up my mind
Won’t worry no more
I want to be just who I am, who I am
Don’t define me
Don’t confine me

YUSHIO
Here's to all the misfits around the globe.
One girl questioned...I am not Japanese enough, I am not American enough. Then, who am I?
A TCK's journey to find peace with her mixed identity became a poem.
When that poem reached a musician in Tokyo, she instantly connected to the words through her own lens of having been a misfit in school. Then the poem became a song overnight.
Four artists who are also mothers, collaborated between the United States and Japan to deliver this song.
Listen.
And you may find your own story within it.
