Waking up in the middle of a feverish night
The surface of my water’s trembling in the light
Neon colors bleeding through the curtain's seam
The TV’s murmuring a distant, tragic scheme
And then, out of nowhere, it all comes back to me
A room in the country where the wind was blowing free
The buzzing of cicadas and the old electric fan
The nights back then, when the world began
I open up the window but nothing starts to change
Only time is flowing, silent and so strange
Just a sudden moment, out of the blue
Childhood memories come rushing through
It’s not like I’m begging to go back to the start
But those days weren't so bad, deep in my heart
"You’ve grown up now, haven't you?"
Those words are sinking in, quiet and true
The starry sky we watched that night so long ago
Is out of reach now, in the city’s glow
Giant dreams and the tiny stumbles on the way
So many sunsets fading at the end of every day
I can’t cry as easily as I used to do
Back when the world was wide and everything was new
I’m more free than ever, or so the story goes
But why does my shadow look so lonely? Heaven knows
Everything is shifting, everything is new
But something’s still remaining, deep inside the view
The scent of the grass on a summer afternoon
The long, dancing shadows beneath a rising moon
They’re melting into the dark of the night
Calling out my name, soft and light
"You’ve grown up now, haven't you?"
I thought I heard a voice, whispering through
Through the tears and the laughter, the joy and the pain
Those days are the reason I’m standing in the rain
I stood on my tiptoes, trying to be tall
Walking with my chin up, waiting for the call
But somewhere in the distance, left behind the door
A kindness is waiting... just like before
Just a sudden moment, out of the blue
Childhood memories come rushing through
I know there’s no way to return to the past
But I’ll hold onto the things meant to last
"You’ve grown up now, haven't you?"
It doesn't mean the old self is finally through
It means living the "now," with the "then" inside of you
Adults we’ve become
But the summer wind still blows
Still blows
