Artist Profile

  • Kaoru Watanabe

Born in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. Influenced by her mother's love of singing, she grew up listening to 60s and 70s pop, folk music, and Showa-era pop songs. Studied piano under Noriko Yamamoto from age 3 to around 10. In her late teens, she became deeply involved in theater, photography, and film, moving to Tokyo. While gaining experience in stage theater and documentary production, she studied jazz piano under jazz pianist Shoko Yamagishi and began performing as a singer-pianist in bars and restaurants. 2007: Released her first album, "Swim Over Here." 2009: Released her second album, "Awkward Footprints." With a band featuring pianist Akira Ohbuchi, bassist Makoto Iwasaki, and drummer Michihiro Nakajima, she developed a rich, original band sound through numerous live performances. Her original songs, featuring unique Japanese lyrics set to acoustic sounds leaning towards jazz and bossa nova, gained support from diverse audiences. "Awkward Footprints" was featured as the closing theme for an FM radio station in her hometown of Osaka. In-store live performances at Tower Records Shibuya and other live tours were also well-received. In 2011, through her own initiative, she held an all-female afternoon live event titled "Welcome to Kaoroom" at a private house studio in Tokyo, based on the concept of girls' talk. Her relaxed, natural acoustic performances in the living room, bathed in afternoon sunlight, were highly acclaimed. In 2012, she released the DVD "Welcome to Kaoroom". In 2013, she released the single "Jellyfish no Yume no Naka" on iTunes. Her unit, featuring veteran musicians with extensive live experience, gained acclaim for its light, relaxed acoustic sound. Currently, she performs primarily original songs in various unit configurations and solo live shows at jazz bars in Tokyo. She also co-produces innovative collaborative live performances with renowned piano tuner Takeshi Miyazaki and face conductor Lisa Nishimura. Her diverse activities further include providing music for TV programs and modeling for interior design magazines.
