This is a folk tale from a village that relied on the bounty of the Nogawa River, in which the villagers enshrined a deity carrying cucumbers that had floated down the river. The story conveys the message that the rivers bounty belongs to everyone, and even today, there is a custom at nearby shrines of not eating cucumbers on festival days.
