Melencolia

Taking its title from Dürer's Melencolia I, this song follows an unfinished painting and an ordinary morning.On a day when no answers come, she makes tea, ties her hair, and keeps moving through the day. Albrecht Dürer's Melencolia I is a copperplate engraving created in 1514. At its center, a winged figure sits in deep thought, holding a compass. Around the figure are tools, a ruler, a polyhedron, a sphere, an hourglass, a bell, a magic square, a ladder, and a sleeping dog objects that suggest intellect, craft, time, and creation. Yet the figure does not use them, remaining still, as if facing an inner impasse. Rather than depicting simple sadness, the work is often interpreted as an image of human intelligence and creativity confronting their own limits and solitude.
