Spring has come and I remember again

Open the envelope, the same familiar lines

“Is this taxable too?” I sigh

Looking up at the sky, letting out a breath

I believe the work I do comes back to me

Telling myself it’s for the future, again and again

(But… yeah, it stings just a little)

Taxes, taxes, such heavy words

But they help build this country’s tomorrow

Schools, roads, and healthcare too

It’s a system for everyone, right?

(Thanks! But wow, it’s kind of high…)

Every expense I jot in my ledger

Consumption tax tagging along every day

Peeking at my convenience store receipt

“Is this taxed too? Come on, stop!”

I know it’s the country’s rule

But payroll slips make me a little scared

(Ah) Pension, health insurance fees

Deductions, exemptions… what should I do?!

I get it, it’s necessary

An investment to protect the future

(But… saving up is really tough)

Taxes, taxes, keeping our lives afloat

They’re everywhere in our daily routine

Electricity, water, even libraries

Used for everyone, right?

(Still… I can’t help but sigh a bit…)

Will I ever laugh and say

“This is a part of me”?

If someone in the future is happy

Then maybe now is just a time to endure

Taxes, taxes, heavy but meaningful

They help keep the world turning

Creating smiles for someone

If we can support it together, that’s enough

(But honestly… I wish taxes were lower!)
