Artist Profile

  • Jidaisho Yu

Yu Jidaisho is a composer, track maker, and contrabass player based in Japan. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in instrumental performance and completed his Masters program at the same institution, where he specialized in contrabass performance while exploring a wide range of musical expressions beyond the classical tradition. While rooted in classical training, Yu has been involved in diverse musical contexts including pop music, Japanese kayokyoku, tokusatsu-related works, contemporary music, ambient music, and theatrical and dramatic scoring. Through performance, recording, and composition across these fields, he has developed a flexible approach to music-making, adapting his compositional and production methods to suit the specific style, narrative, and purpose of each project. As a track maker and composer, his strength lies in choosing the appropriate methodology for each musical form rather than imposing a fixed personal style. He places strong emphasis on texture, space, and the physicality of sound. Drawing from his extensive experience as a string player, he has a deep understanding of string techniques, articulation, and ensemble balance, allowing him to design organic, expressive textures and layered sound structures with precision. Yu also places great importance on songwriting, particularly in relation to the Japanese language. In songs with lyrics, he prioritizes natural phrasing, accent, and rhythm so that words can emerge clearly and honestly within the music. His approach seeks a balance where the track supports the lyrics without overpowering them, allowing melody and language to breathe together. In recent years, Yu has consciously shifted his focus toward writing a larger number of songs with lyrics, aiming to establish himself more firmly as a composer and songwriter. His recent work "Young Dream" represents this turning point: a pop song that deliberately avoids excessive complexity or speed, instead emphasizing clarity, restraint, and the natural delivery of Japanese lyrics. For him, the piece marks both a culmination of past experience and a new starting point.
