Cheek Time
Mai Mishio
Eight years since her previous release, "Mishio Lied", Mai Mishio's latest album,"Turn Around", is an ambitious project co-produced with Takuro Okada and mastered by Alex DeTurk, an engineer at The Bunker Studio in New York whose credits include Big Crown Records, David Bowie, and D'Angelo.
Alongside newly arranged, re-recorded versions of her signature songs "If You Say So, Good bye" and "Pointless Phone Calls" the album presents a diverse set that reaches beyond a conventional band sound. Highlights include "Cheek Time", which blends Chicano soul with a 1960s Japanese pop mood, and the danceable "Things I've Done", mellow and Tropicália-tinged with hints of Brazilian psych. Drifting between retro and vintage, it is a record that leaves a deep sense of fulfillment after the final note.
For the album cover, the artist photographs were shot by photographer Katsuhide Morimoto. Art director Tetsuya Nagato layered photographs and paper, then re-shot them with a macro lens; the resulting image gives the album a minimal, elegant visual identity and serves as its defining artwork.
The advance single "Things I've Done / Cheek Time" will be released digitally on October 31.
