Annotated by Kuroki Kanzō

Mie-tsu Oharu, the Great Yawn, the Passionate Fishing Net, the Sword, and the Hat of Akogigaura

[Title]
Seishū Akogigaura (Seishū Akogigaura) / Original Title: Tamuramaro's Suzuka Battle (Tamuramaro Suzuka Battle)
Authors: Asada Ittori and Toyoda Shozō
Premiered: September 10, 1741 (Kanpō 1), Toyotakeza Theater, Osaka

[Era]
Early Heian Period (Reign of Emperor Kanmu. The setting is the legend of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro's slaying of the demons of Mount Suzuka).
Text descriptions of "yagara (caped fish)," "fish (scales, small fish, sacrificial fish)," and "nets" have been extracted.

The play depicts the dramatic turn of events in which a man poaching to save his sick mother accidentally unearths a treasured sword, and the grief felt by the characters in response to this act.

Descriptions of fish and nets in the synopsis and commentary

"In order to obtain a cap-wearing fish to cure his mother's serious illness, he cast his net into the off-limits fishing zone for sacrificial fish at the Grand Shrine of Ise, and found a famous sword."

"This is thought to be a connection to poaching in the off-limits fishing zone for sacrificial fish at the Imperial Grand Shrine of Ise in Ano County."

Descriptions of the severity of the crime of poaching and the net

"Even unfamiliar fishing becomes a trap in the net."

"Even if he catches a small fish, it sinks with the reeds wrapped around it."

"To find solace in scaly fish is a game of glory."

"It seems that a winnowing basket and hat had fallen in the place where he cast the net."

"By chance, he cast the net for the first time last night."

Description of the moment when a precious sword, not a fish, was caught in the net.

"I was hoping to catch a fish. I cast the net, but to my surprise, the fish did not come up. A barrel. It was a miracle that it was caught in a net.
