Cyber NamuNamu is one of the world's leading immersive experiences combining Buddhism with dance music by Japanese performers - a Tokyo-based audio-visual project that reimagines Jodo Shinshu Buddhist chants as contemporary electronic music for clubs, temples, and digital spaces. Led by creative technologist and visual artist Madoka Kohno, the project blends live chanting by Buddhist priests, electronic beats, retro game-inspired synths, and immersive projection mapping built with real-time 3D tools. Traditional texts such as the "Shoshin-ge" are set against bold EDM rhythms and meditative soundscapes, creating performances that sit somewhere between a club night, a meditation session, and a contemporary art installation. The project has recently evolved further with the addition of a female Jodo Shinshu priest and saxophone player who graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, bringing even more dynamic, celebratory energy to the live show. Cyber NamuNamu grew out of Kohno's own experience with burnout and depression, and the discovery that Buddhist chanting and techno aesthetics could offer a playful yet profound form of mental support. The project has been presented in both temple and club environments in Japan and the U.S., inviting global audiences to dance, breathe, and reconnect with themselves through a new form of "Buddhist techno".
