एक समय की बात है, कहीं एक दादा और दादी रहते थे।
दादा रोज़ की तरह कंचनजंघा पर लकड़ी काटने जाते, और दादी गंगा नदी पर कपड़े धोने जाती थीं।
एक दिन, दादी गंगा में कपड़े धो रही थीं कि तभी
डोंबुराको… डोंबुराको…
बहते हुए पानी में एक बहुत बड़ा आड़ू (पीच) तैरता हुआ आया।
“अरे, यह तो बहुत बढ़िया मिठाई बनेगी!”
दादी ने वह बड़ा आड़ू उठाया और घर ले आईं।
जब दादा और दादी ने आड़ू को काटा, तो उसके अंदर से एक चंचल, तंदुरुस्त बच्चा बाहर कूद पड़ा!
“यह तो भगवान का आशीर्वाद ही होगा।”
बच्चे न होने के कारण उदास दादा–दादी बहुत खुश हुए।
उन्होंने उस आड़ू से जन्मे बच्चे का नाम रखा
मोमोतारो (桃太郎)।
मोमोतारो धीरे-धीरे बड़ा हुआ और एक मज़बूत व बहादुर लड़का बन गया।
एक दिन मोमोतारो ने कहा
“मैं ओनिगाशिमा जाऊँगा और वहाँ के बुरे राक्षसों को हराकर आऊँगा!”
दादी ने उसके लिए किबी दंगो (खास पकौड़ी) बनाए, और मोमोतारो यात्रा पर निकल पड़ा।
रास्ते में उसकी मुलाक़ात एक कुत्ते से हुई।
“मोमोतारो-साँ, कहाँ जा रहे हो?”
“ओनिगाशिमा। राक्षसों को हराने।”
“तो मुझे एक किबी दंगो दे दीजिए। मैं भी आपका साथी बनूँगा।”
कुत्ता साथी बन गया।
फिर आगे एक बंदर मिला, फिर एक राजहंस/किज़ी (किंजी)।
दोनों ने भी वही कहा
“एक किबी दंगो दीजिए, हम भी साथ चलेंगे।”
इस तरह मोमोतारो के साथ कुत्ता, बंदर और किज़ी तीनों साथी बन गए।
ओनिगाशिमा का युद्ध
ओनिगाशिमा पहुँचकर उन्होंने देखा कि राक्षस गाँव से लूटे हुए खज़ाने और भोजन लेकर शराब पीते हुए उत्सव मना रहे थे।
“कोई पीछे मत हटना! सब, हमला करो!”
कुत्ते ने राक्षस की कमर पर काटा
बंदर ने उसकी पीठ पर खरोंचें मारीं
किज़ी ने अपनी चोंच से राक्षस की आँख पर वार किया
और मोमोतारो ने अपनी तलवार घुमा कर जबर्दस्त लड़ाई की।
आख़िरकार, राक्षसों का सरदार चिल्लाया
“मैं हार गया! मुझे माफ़ कर दो! दया करो!”
मोमोतारो और उसके साथियों ने राक्षसों से लिया हुआ सारा खज़ाना गाड़ी में भरा और खुशी-खुशी घर लौट आए।
दादा-दादी ने मोमोतारो को सुरक्षित लौटते देखा और बहुत प्रसन्न हुए।
और फिर, वे तीनों उस खज़ाने की वजह से हमेशा-हमेशा के लिए खुशी-खुशी रहने लगे।

he embarks on his journey and befriends a dog, monkey, and pheasant,

they find the ogres feasting on treasures stolen from nearby villages.
A fierce battle unfolds-
the dog bites, the monkey scratches, the pheasant strikes,
and Momotaro fights bravely with his sword.
Finally, the ogre leader surrenders:

Momotaro and his companions recover the stolen treasures
and return home in triumph.
The elderly couple celebrates his safe return,
