Manchester-based producer Mecca:83 has released his long-awaited new album, "Until Dawn"! The 12 tracks, which incorporate his jazz, soul, and golden-era boom-bap roots while incorporating contemporary textures, present a dramatic and deep hip-hop journey.
The pre-release track, "Don't Stop," features powerful verses from Detroit stalwarts Phat Kat & Guilty Simpson, while UK turntablist Jabba Tha Kut's sharp scratches add further intensity to the track. The boom-bap-style sound, reminiscent of the golden age of the '90s, is a track that evokes the strength of Mecca:83's roots. Other tracks include the futuristic jazz-hip-hop track "Elevation," featuring jazz keyboardist Jonny Tobin; "Proof of Life," featuring New York lyricist Nardo Says; the mellow soul track "Sober" featuring Ella Mae Sueref, whose delicate vocals touch the soul; and "Midnight Run," featuring Lex (de Kalhex), known as part of the French group Kalhex.
Produced, mixed, and arranged entirely by Mecca:83, the album is imbued with meticulous craftsmanship and a warm texture. Live instrumental elements, such as Luman Child's bass ("Silent Arrival"), Donald Malloy's trumpet ("Sober"), and Markita on Flute's flute ("The Light Inside"), are also incorporated throughout, creating a deep groove.
The artwork is by Joel van der Knaap (Roam Comics), who has garnered attention for his graphic novel-like aesthetic.
The label is handled by rockwell product shop, which also released the 2017 7-inch "Let's Get It" featuring InI member Grap Luva, as well as "Life Sketches Vol. 3," which includes the track.
With a profound soundscape, melodies and words that quietly move the heart. At the intersection of hip-hop and jazz, Mecca:83 has created a soundtrack for the future.
